Otto Haab

Otto Haab (born April 19, 1850 in Wülflingen near Winterthur , † October 17, 1931 in Zurich ) was a Swiss ophthalmologist .

Haab received his doctorate in 1875 after studying medicine in Zurich. Since 1874 he was assistant to Carl Joseph Eberth in pathological anatomy. In 1877 he became an assistant to Johann Friedrich Horner . In 1879 he completed his habilitation in ophthalmology and in 1886 took over Horner's professorship at the University of Zurich , which he held until 1919. Haab had the instruments manufactured and repaired by Johannes Konrad Grieshaber . In 1885 he provided a clinical description of macular degeneration . For the extraction of intraocular foreign bodies he developed a giant magnet that carried his name well into the 20th century.
