Otto Hauck (born March 12, 1938 in Rohrbach ) is a German judge i. R. and honorary chairman of the German Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired in studies and work .

Life

Otto Hauck was born on March 12, 1938 in Rohrbach near Coburg . He lost his father during World War II . Blinded in early childhood, he began his school career at the school for the blind in Nuremberg and then switched to the advanced high school of the Carl Strehl School in Marburg, where he passed his Abitur in 1959. After studying law and political science at the Philipps University of Marburg , completing his legal traineeship and completing his doctorate on a topic from neighborhood law, Hauck was appointed assessor at the Marburg Regional Court in 1969 and later a judge for life. Until his retirement in 1999 he was a judge there, most recently as presiding judge of a chamber for commercial matters.

Voluntary work

Otto Hauck joined the Association of Blind Spiritual Workers in Germany (VbGD, today the German Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired in Study and Work, DVBS) as a student in 1956. His voluntary work began at the end of the 1960s when he, together with other young, blind lawyers, opposed efforts in North Rhine-Westphalia to no longer admit blind and severely visually impaired people to judges . In 1971 he became chairman of the Hesse district in the VbGD and in the same year founded the law department of the association, of which he was chairman until 1996. This started a reorientation of the association towards a professional organization for blind and visually impaired people in Germany. In 1974 Hauck was elected to the board of the VbGD and since 1975 he has been a member of the board of directors of blista . From 1979 to 2004 he directed the fortunes of the DVBS as its first chairman for 25 years. For 30 years he was also part of the editorial team of the magazine "horus - Marburger Contributions", whose profile he played a key role in shaping.

Hauck heads the DVBS “Disadvantage Compensation Working Group”, which deals with fundamental issues of disability policy, and the “Joint Legal Policy Working Group” of the German self-help for the blind and visually impaired, which prepares opinions on current legal issues. Until November 2012, Hauck was deputy chairman of the blista board of directors.

Awards

  • For his services, the general meeting of the association appointed him honorary chairman in 2004.
  • On his 60th birthday he received the letter of honor from the State of Hesse .
  • In 2005, Federal President Horst Köhler awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, in recognition of his commitment to self-help .
  • In 2011, Hauck received the Special Life Award, a "European prize for special people with handicaps" in Innsbruck .
  • On November 15, 2013, he received the Carl Strehl plaque .

Hauck received the latter award in recognition of his commitment to the interests of blind and visually impaired people. With this award, the two national and international organizations based in Marburg, Deutsche Blindenstudienanstalt eV (blista) and the German Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired in Studies and Work (DVBS) honor people who have made outstanding contributions in the field of "education and rehabilitation of the blind and the visually impaired ”. The plaque commemorates the co-founder of both institutions, Carl Strehl . The special value of the award lies in the fact that it is rarely given. In more than 30 years, Hauck is the twelfth person to receive this honor.
