Otto IV. (Rietberg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Count Otto IV von Rietberg († January 5th / 6th 1553 near Metz ) was Count von Rietberg from 1535 to 1552 .

Otto IV. Was the eldest son of Otto III. and his first wife Anna von Sayn. In their marriage contract it was stated that the firstborn should be a clergyman. The contract was drawn up in such a way that the eldest could also become a count if he so wished. Therefore there were many quarrels between Otto IV and his half-brother Johann II from the father's second marriage.

On Palm Sunday 1540 Otto IV married Katharina bei Rhein (1510–1542), daughter of Alexander von Pfalz-Zweibrücken , who had been a nun in the Marienberg monastery in Boppard . In 1541 Otto IV was under English pay and returned in 1544 and participated in the staff of the German Masters . In his absence, the county was administered by a Hessian bailiff from 1538 to 1548. Following the Hessian model, Otto IV introduced the Lutheran church order in the county. Otto IV died childless on January 5 or 6, 1553 near Metz . Initially, a cousin, Friedrich Wetter, was the trustee of the property until Otto IV's half-brother Johann II. Succeeded the county.

Otto IV was buried in the Franciscan monastery in Rietberg .
