Joseph Späth

Joseph Späth (born March 13, 1823 in Bozen , † March 29, 1896 in Vienna ) was an Austrian gynecologist .

Späth studied medicine in Vienna from 1844 and received his doctorate in 1849. He was also a master of obstetrics. After completing his studies, he was Johann Baptist Chiari's assistant from 1849 to 1850 and then went to the maternity clinic for midwives, where he worked until 1854. In 1858 he received his habilitation at the University of Vienna. After teaching at the Josephinum in Vienna since 1855 , he accepted the call of the University of Vienna in 1861, where he took over the newly established 2nd obstetric and gynecological clinic. He was also later dean and rector of the university. After he went blind in 1886 as a result of an eye condition that had existed for several years, he resigned the management of the clinic.

In 1953 the Späthgasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after him.
