Otto May (collector)

Otto May (born April 30, 1951 ) is a German high school teacher and collector of historical postcards .

Act

May came to the Scharnhorstgymnasium in Hildesheim on February 1, 1975 , where he taught mathematics , physics and computer science and where he was later a coordinator . Since 1986 he has been looking after the school students participating in science competitions. He specifically encourages the participation of girls. Until 2005 he supervised three groups of students in founding student companies. He initiated the school's internal mathematics competition as well as the "Science Evening", which has been held annually since 1988, at which the participants in national competitions visiting the school publicly present their contributions.

May is also known nationwide as a collector of historical postcards. In several publications he places postcards in an educational context. 8000 postcards from his collection have been digitized in the Pictura Paedagogica Online image archive and can be accessed online. With a thesis on mentality and subject education in postcards from the Wilhelmine era, May received her doctorate in 1998 from the University of Hildesheim .

Exhibitions

In the summer of 2007, the Hildesheim City Museum presented the exhibition “Experimenting - Researching - Developing - Hildesheim Youth on the Way to the Future”, which May had put together. In December 2007 a selection of Christmas postcards from his collection was on display in the hall of the Hildesheim town hall . From July 23 to August 29, 2008, postcards from the May collection were the subject of the special exhibition “On the Road in 1900 in and around Hildesheim” in the Hildesheim City Hall.
