Otto Zykan
Otto Zykan (born August 12, 1902 in Vienna ; † January 13, 1989 ibid) was an Austrian composer, classical guitarist and guitar teacher. He was the father of the Austrian composer Otto M. Zykan .
From 1921 Otto Zykan studied guitar at the New Vienna Conservatory and composition with Joseph Marx at the then State Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna (now the university). There he obtained his diploma in 1935. From 1937 to 1944 he worked as a guitarist at the Burgtheater . From 1945 to 1967 he taught at the music schools of the City of Vienna, from 1962 as a professor, guitar.
Zyklan wrote textbooks for guitar. He was also active as a composer. He was a founding member of the Association of Austrian Guitarists. There he held the functions of secretary, board member and choir director for a long time. He wrote numerous specialist articles in the news of this union of guitarists. Zykan is one of the most important chroniclers in Austria in the field of classical concert guitar. At a concert by Andrés Segovia in Vienna in 1924, Zykan received the decisive impetus for his professional career. Numerous compositions by Zykan for guitar solo and in connection with other instruments as well as music for voice, piano and organ winds were performed, but remained unpublished.
