The Oued Laou ( called Oued Siflaou in the upper reaches ) is an approximately 70 km long coastal river in northern Morocco . It only carries water after prolonged or heavy rainfall; otherwise it falls largely or completely dry for several months a year.
course
The Oued Siflaou arises a few kilometers south-east of Chefchaouen in the center of the Rif Mountains from the union of two source streams - which are water-bearing especially after heavy rainfall - each at an altitude of about 1600 meters above sea level. d. M arise on the western flank of Jbel Tassouka. At first it flows a short distance to the west, then turns to the northeast, and finally flows into the Mediterranean near the small town of Oued Laou .
Tributaries and reservoir
The Oued Laou has only a few smaller tributaries, but they also only carry water at times. In its upper reaches, northwest of Chefchaouen, the river is dammed in the Barrage d'Ali Thelat, which has a maximum capacity of 30 million cubic meters, for irrigation purposes and to generate electricity.
