Oueslatia or El Oueslatia ( Arabic الوسلاتية) is a place in the Kairouan Governorate , in the center of Tunisia and the capital of the delegation of the same name . Oueslatia is located west of the city of Kairouan , near the border with the Siliana Governorate , in the center of a plain between the Djebel Ousselat and the Djebel Serj , on the southern flank of the Tunisian dorsal .

Residents

Oueslatia has 8444 inhabitants (2004). 34,452 people (2014) live in the associated delegation. The place is considered an Islamist stronghold . The alleged assassin Anis Amri comes from here . Many young people are leaving the region, which is one of the poorest in Tunisia. The agricultural potential is not being exploited due to the lack of marketing structures and channels.

There are several caves at Oueslatia. Some were mined and there are also numerous rock paintings showing hunting scenes with rhinos, ostriches and buffalo. They reflect the region in the Neolithic when it was still more humid.

30 kilometers north of Oueslatia is the ancient site of Ksar Lemsa with the ruins of a Byzantine fortress and a Roman amphitheater.

In the direction of Siliana is the mausoleum of C. Marius Romanus.
