Oumar Ba
Oumar Ba (* 1906 in Bandiagara , † 1964 in Niamey ) was a Nigerien physician , trade unionist and politician .
Life
Oumar Ba graduated from the medical school in Dakar , the then capital of French West Africa , and then worked for the administration of the French colonies as a médecin africain ("African doctor"). After initially working in other French colonies in the Sahel , he settled in the colony of Niger. There he worked in the capital Niamey in 1941, in Tessaoua from 1942 to 1943 and in Tillabéri from 1944 to 1947 , where he was entrusted with the medical management of the Tillabéri health district.
In the elections to the General Council of 1946/1947 , which established Niger 's first parliament , Oumar Ba was elected a member of the Nigerien Progressive Party (PPN-RDA) in the constituency of Tillabéri. With his election in January 1947, he temporarily gave up his work as a doctor. In August 1947 he founded the syndicate of African physicians, pharmacists and midwives in Niger. Ba was elected General Secretary of the Union of Syndicates of Niger in November of the same year, became a member of the Grand Council of French West Africa and, on November 14, 1948, Senator for Niger in the Upper House of France in Paris . He was no longer a member of the PPN-RDA, but the Union of Independent Nigerians and Sympathizers (UNIS). He did not join any parliamentary group in the House of Lords and worked on the Commission for Family, Population and Health, but rarely appeared in public meetings.
In the Senate elections in May 1952, Ba was no longer set up by UNIS. He then returned to his medical profession and died eight years later in Niamey.
