Oasis landscape in the Ounila Valley

The Ounila Valley in the province of Ouarzazate in the Drâa-Tafilalet region , with its still partially preserved clay Berber villages, is one of the scenic and cultural impressions in southern Morocco .

location

The approx. 30 km long Ounila Valley, about 50 to 80 km (as the crow flies) northwest of Ouarzazate , connects the places Aït-Ben-Haddou (approx. 1300  m ) and Telouet (approx. 1800  m ) , which are often visited by tourists . It takes its name from the Oued Ounila ( Tamazight : Assif Ounila ), which joins the Assif n'Tidili about 20 km west of Ouarzazate . However, it only carries water in the winter months and early spring; the rest of the year it falls dry due to the low rainfall (almost 200 mm / year). The formerly single-lane runway (P-1506) on the mountain slopes along the river was upgraded to an easily navigable asphalt road in 2011/12.

Villages

The most important villages in the Ounila Valley, lined with palm oases and small plots, are Tamdakht and Tazleft ; Anguelz and Anemiter are at the northern exit of the valley . The latter location was painted several times by Jacques Majorelle and others in the 1920s and 1930s ; the remains of two residential castles ( tighremts ) still stand here , but the village has remained quite original in other ways too - the same applies to Ouahsous .

visit

The valley is now easily accessible from Marrakech or from Ouarzazate. Regional operators often offer day tours in connection with a visit to Ait-Ben-Haddou and Telouet. In some villages in the valley there are now simple café-restaurants and overnight accommodation.
