The sports magazine Outrun was a German-language magazine for athletes who live with a disability and was published from 1999 to 2010.

It was the only free, association-independent periodical for this special target group in the German-speaking area, whereby Outrun basically considered all sports in its reporting.

From its founding in 1999 onwards, the magazine was published every three months by the Verlag Verlag, according to media data in 2008 with a print run of 12,500 copies (widespread circulation: 11,500). For the Paralympics 2000 in Sydney, 2002 in Salt Lake City, 2004 in Athens and 2006 in Turin, the special editions Outrun were published. At the Paralympics 2008 in Beijing, all reporting was integrated into the regular editions. The last issue appeared in winter 2010/11. After that the magazine was discontinued.

The personal fates behind the disabilities of the athletes were usually not an issue in Outrun. The disability of the athletes was only mentioned explicitly when the context required it. Accordingly, articles were not provided with headings like "Sport despite disabilities" from the first issue. For just as long, the term competition class replaced the term damage class, which is sometimes still used today among disabled athletes.

The magazine reported on events, people and backgrounds from the scene. Sports science topics were occasionally dealt with in the Science section. In the Special section, a mostly topical topic was dealt with more extensively and in depth. Topical examples for this are the premier of the Bundesliga in blind football (outrun 1/08) or the development of new trend sports in disabled sports such as Nordic walking for people with a leg amputation (outrun 2/06).

The sometimes dirty-looking appearance of the magazine, which used a lot of variable typography, was based on skater magazines. The magazine deviated strongly from the typical magazine layout and was designed to be calm overall in favor of readability. The format of 213 mm wide by 276 mm high, which differed slightly from the A4 size (210 mm by 297 mm), was part of the booklet concept .

The magazine Outrun ensured its distribution in addition to the classic subscription, among other things, via a free distribution list, which was used to advertise the sport among disabled people.

According to his own statement, Outrun owned one of the most extensive picture archives on the subject of disabled sports .

The magazine was developed by the editor-in-chief and publisher Franco Verschbaumer, who specifically set up the publishing house in Verl. Verschbaumer previously studied sports science at the German Sport University Cologne and public relations at the School for Marketing and Communication Techniques in Florence.

Awards

In 2000 Outrun won the Paralympic Media Award in the Print category. In the same year, the publishing house won 2nd place with its concept in the Cologne regional selection of the StartUp founder award, which was awarded by the magazine Stern , the management consultancy McKinsey & Company and the DSGV .

In 2006 the magazine was the official media partner of the INAS-FID World Cup for people with disabilities in Germany.
