Overgarment

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The overgarment is a protective suit that is used in the area of NBC protection . In addition to being used by the German Armed Forces , the suit is also used secondarily in NBC and hazardous goods trains. In the Bundeswehr, overgarment is also known as personal NBC protective clothing .

properties

The suit offers protection against hazardous chemical substances , including biological and radioactive substances. The protection is limited in time and limited by the amount and type of pollutants introduced.

The suit must be decontaminated with hot air and can therefore be reused to a limited extent after it has been decontaminated. It works primarily through the activity of the filter carbon, but the material also offers limited protection through the filtration of suspended matter via fabric.

Compared to conventional, outwardly insulating protective suits made of rubber, the protection against modern chemical warfare agents that gradually penetrate the rubber is to be noted. The suit offers comparatively good work opportunities, but without reaching the protection level of a real insulating suit.

Components and storage

Originally the suit consisted of a hooded top, pants, gloves and overshoes. The current overgarment is an overall with an inclined zip and hood.

The conventional overgarment consists of cotton and activated carbon layers as well as an impregnation . A dry storage is extremely important to maintain the protective effect.
