Occurrence

The beetles are widespread in Europe. They inhabit different habitats, only the presence of birch trees is mandatory . They are common in Eurasia , as well as in the British Isles and in North Africa .

Way of life

The beetles feed mainly on birch leaves, but also do not disdain alder and other deciduous trees. Before mating, the males fight bitterly for the females. Afterwards, the female cuts an S-shaped groove in a leaf, leaving the midrib untouched. Then it rolls up the sheet of paper, creating a kind of bag. One to six eggs are laid in this. The larvae initially live in the leaf until it is completely withered and falls to the ground. They then leave it and pupate in the ground. The finished beetle hatches from the pupa and can be found from April to June.
