Owstonia is a diverse genus of bandfish (Cepolidae). The fish live on hard floors in the Indo-Pacific from the east coast of Africa to Australia, as well as Japan in the north and New Caledonia in the east at depths of 155 to 550 meters. The genus was named after Alan Owston (1853-1915), an amateur naturalist who mainly studied Asian animals.
features
Like all ribbon fish, Owstonia species are elongated and laterally flattened. When fully grown , they reach standard lengths of 7 ( O. sarmiento ) to 40.8 cm ( O. kamoharai ). They differ from the three other species of ribbon fish (subfamily Cepolinae) mainly in that the dorsal, anal and caudal fins have not grown together. The caudal fin is not bifurcated with elongated central fin rays in most species. The rays of the dorsal and anal fin are thin and flexible. Owstonia species have round scales. The dorsal and anal fins are not scaly. In most species, the "cheeks" are also scaly. The number of gill pelvis rays is 30 to 60 in adult fish, the number of Branchiostegal rays is six. The lower edge of the preoperculum can be smooth or slightly serrated, but it can also have strong spines. The mouth is large, terminal and sloping upwards. The premaxillary is darkly pigmented in most species (not in O. hawaiiensis, O. ignota and in most specimens of O. psilos ). The palate is toothless. The swim bladder is well developed.
