Pádraic Ó Conaire (born February 20, 1882 in Galway , † October 6, 1928 in Dublin ) was an Irish writer and journalist who wrote in Irish .

Life

Pádraic Ó Conaire came from the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht part of the Irish West and grew up in his uncle's house in Ros Muc , Connemara , County Galway . Mostly he wrote about the life experiences of the Irish-born, illiterate workers who worked in Britain in the early 20th century . He lived with his family in London from 1899 until his return to Ireland in 1914.

He has published many collections of short stories, including Scothscéalta and Nora Mharcais Bhig (1906). Some of these were very controversial in what was then a highly conservative and Catholic society in Ireland. He has also published two novels, Deoraíocht (1910) and Fearfeasa Mac Feasa (1930).

He was married to Molly Ní Mhanais and had four children with her. When he returned to Ireland, however, he left his family in London; after that he lived mostly in Galway. He was addicted to alcohol and died in great poverty in a Dublin hospital in 1928.
