Pádraig Ó Riain

Pádraig Ó Riain [ ˈpɑːdrigʲ oː ˈriənʲ ] (* 1939 ) is an Irish Celtologist and hagiologist . He is considered to be the leading expert on Irish saints .

Ó Riain spent most of his academic life at University College Cork . From 1964 he was a lecturer there , and from 1973 until his retirement he was professor of Old and Middle Irish . He has been a member of the Royal Irish Academy since 1989 , President of the Irish Texts Society since 1992 , Parnell Fellow at Magdalene College, Cambridge University since 2002, and most recently a member of the Placenames Commission of Ireland . In 1995 he was awarded the Humboldt Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany and in 2003 the Derek Allen Prize of the British Academy for " distinction in the field of Celtic Studies " .

His main research interests are Irish hagiography , mythology , onomastics , manuscript studies and Irish martyrs .
