Pál Tomori (* 1475 ; ⚔ August 29, 1526 with Mohács ) was a Hungarian officer and Archbishop of Kalocsa . In the 1526 battle of Mohács against the Ottomans , he was the main commander of the Hungarian army.

Life

The scion of a small noble family began his military career as a feudal lord of János Bornemisza . He later became the castellan of the Fagaras and Munkács castles and the captain of the Buda castle . He was also involved in the suppression of the peasant uprising led by György Dózsa .

In mid-1520 he divided his fortune among relatives and joined the Franciscan order . When another war broke out between the Hungarians and the Ottomans in 1521, he refused to leave the monastery in Esztergom , where he lived as a monk, despite repeated requests to take over command on the part of the Hungarians .

It was not until 1523 that he assumed the office of Archbishop of Kalocsa on the express instruction of the Pope and at the same time assumed the position of chief commander of the southern line of defense against the Ottomans.

Shortly before the Battle of Mohács, he was elected chief commander of the Hungarian army in 1526 because Johann Zápolya , the actual commander, was not there and therefore could not intervene in the fighting.

Tomori fell in the battle in which the Hungarian contingent was defeated by the Ottomans.
