Pedagogy or pedagogy. Journal for Theory and Practice of Socialist Education (from 1959) appeared as the leading specialist journal for educational science topics from 1946 to 1990 in East Berlin, first in the Soviet occupation zone , then in the GDR. The first editor-in-chief was Max Gustav Lange , who fled to the West in 1950, together with Robert Alt and Rudolf Söhring. The German Central Pedagogical Institute of the GDR , newly founded in 1950, continued to publish the magazine up to issue 9/1970 with the task of "developing pedagogical theory in such a way that it enables continuous improvement of progressive pedagogical practice" (1/50, p. 1 ). After the conversion to the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the GDR in 1970, it continued to appear in this editorial office until issue 7/8 1990. Its president Gerhart Neuner was editor-in-chief from 1957 to 1970, followed by Ernst Pilz (1923–) until 1989 whose retirement then Hermann Kroh. The magazine was instrumental in socialist education in the GDR.

After parts of the Volk und Wissen publishing house had been sold to Luchterhand Verlag , a follow-up magazine, Pedagogy and School Life , was published in autumn 1990 .
