history

Two training centers in Magdeburg were concerned with the training of new teachers after 1946 and later of lower school teachers for grades 1-4, which in 1951 received the status of institutes for teacher training and in 1953 were combined into a unified institute for teacher training (IfL). In cooperation with major Magdeburg companies, it was the pioneering institution for the introduction of polytechnical instruction from 1958. In 1959, upper-level teachers were trained in the subjects of German, history, mathematics, physics, physical education, biology and "Basics of industrial production". On September 1, 1962, the facility was renamed the Pedagogical Institute , where around 1000 students (direct and distance learning ) were taught by 80 teachers. In 1965, however, mathematics and physics were handed over to the university. In 1966 the polytechnic was also dropped, but Russian was added. Finally, on September 1, 1972, the University of Education with the suffix “Erich Weinert” was founded to train qualified teachers. The Special Education was formed. Doctorates to Dr. paed. and Dr. phil., as well as habilitations were possible. After the reunification, English and music education were set up and in 1991 the IfL was integrated in Magdeburg and Staßfurt. On April 1, 1993, the PH was taken over as the humanities, social and educational science faculty in the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, which was in the process of being founded (now the human science faculty).

Rectors were the later SED functionary Helmut Winnig (from 1954), Heinz Schaffenhauer (1967–1976), Klaus Schaeffer (1976–1986) and Winfried Baudisch (1986–1993). The latter was honored in 1989 as an Honored University Professor of the GDR .
