occupation

P-51 Dragon Fighter is an American B-movie that combines elements of the war film and the fantasy film . Directed by Mark Atkins , who also wrote the script.

action

In 1942 the German campaign in Africa is about to end. The cryptozoologist Dr. Gudrun and SS- Man Emerick let the eggs found in the desert breed dragons in order to turn the war back on. The kites are controlled by a unit of Vril clerics using mind control.

The Americans get wind of the matter and the ex-pilot John Robbins receives the order to put together a top-secret air combat unit of 8 experienced pilots to fight the dragons. In a costly air battle, one of the dragons is shot down and falls into the desert. Robbins leads some soldiers to the crash site, where they are already awaited by German soldiers and are taken prisoner. They are brought to Erwin Rommel , who tells them about a secret underground breeding station. Rommel fears that the female dragons, which reproduce through parthenogenesis , could hatch a rare and much more powerful male specimen. The clerics would then no longer be able to control the dragons, which would result in the end of the civilized world. Rommel reports from an insider in the hatchery and lets the soldiers go.

Robbins launched an attack with a B-17 bomber and several Mustangs while a ground team infiltrated the hatchery. One of the Vril turns out to be a contact person. They open a ventilation shaft through which the B-17 is supposed to drop the bombs. Meanwhile, the male dragon wakes up, recognizable by its wings, which are colored like swastika flags . The male burns Dr. Gudrun with a burst of fire and takes off. There is a final air shaft between the mustangs and the kites. Robbins steers his Mustang into the male dragon to destroy it. However, he can save himself with the ejection seat and is picked up by the survivors of the ground squad and returns to base camp, where he has since fallen in love with the nurse Rachel McKee.

Others

  • The "D" version of the P-51 Mustang equipped with the transparent hood shown in the film was not put into service until 1944, two years after the film was opened.

reception

The film received average to below average ratings. Above all, the idea and the implementation of the dragons was praised, but the CGI animations are inadequate and the characters are boring.

The film was nominated for the Action on Film International Film Festival .
