P. Sainath ( Palagummi Sainath ; * 1957 in Madras ) is an Indian journalist .

Life

P. Sainath is a grandson of the politician VV Giri . He describes himself as a reporter and photojournalist who specializes in: social problems, rural affairs, poverty and the effects of globalization on India . The Indian economist Amartya Sen calls him one of the “world's most important experts in the field of famine and hunger”.

In 1993, Sainath began researching poverty. He got to the ten poorest districts of India on foot and by various means of transport. He covered a good 100,000 km all over India, 5000 km of which on foot. He finally put his experiences and insights on paper in his book "Everybody Loves a Good Drought". This title remained number one on various Indian non-fiction bestseller lists for more than two years until it was finally included in the “Penguin India all-time best sellers”. The book is now in its 31st edition. A translation into German took place in 2012 under the title: “Poverty - a good business. Reports from India ”.

Awards

In 2007 he was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Prize . He received this "Asian Nobel Peace Prize" in the category "Journalism, Literature, and the Creative Communication Arts".

Furthermore, he has received around 40 national and international journalism awards and grants in 30 years. These included the prestigious Raja-Lakshmi Award from the Sri Raja-Lakshmi Foundation, Chennai, 1993, the Lorenzo Natali Award from the European Commission, 1994, an award for his services to human rights in 2000 by Amnesty International and in 2009 he was awarded the Ramnath Goenka Award as "Journalist of the Year" by the Indian Express daily . In June 2011, P. Sainath was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Alberta .

Lectureships, teaching assignments, international cooperation

In 1984 he was a lecturer at the University of Western Ontario and in 1988 he was a lecturer at the University of Moscow . In 2008 he was a visiting professor at the University of California , Berkeley at the Graduate School of Journalism. He worked on global communication both with UNESCO (1990 and 1991) and with the UNHCR sponsored World Information Campaign on Human Rights (1991).
