PC / 104
PC / 104 is a standard and form factor in the electronics industry for PC-compatible modules that can be plugged together to form a complex computing system.
The first version was published in 1992 by the PC / 104 consortium. This standard defines the module size, the location of possible expansion connections and the meaning of the pins of the ISA- compatible PC / 104 connector. The modules with a PCB size of 90.17 mm x 95.89 mm (3.550 "× 3.775") can be placed directly above one another, so that a bus backplane ( backplane may be omitted).
The name is derived from the " Personal Computer " (PC) system developed by IBM and the number of connection pins (104) on the module connector.
With the availability of more powerful components, the expansion of the PC / 104 system with a faster bus system has also become necessary. In 1997 the PCI bus was added to PC / 104 and further developed; it was called PC / 104-Plus . In 2003 PCI-104 was introduced. The connector for the ISA bus was completely omitted here and only the connector for PCI was used. In 2008 PCI / 104 Express and PCIe / 104 were introduced. There, a connector for PCI Express and other interfaces, such as, for example , was installed at the position of the earlier ISA connector . B. USB or SATA introduced. PCI / 104 Express still has the PCI connector, while PCIe / 104 only uses the one for PCI Express. There are two different connector specifications for PCIe / 104 : Type 1 and Type 2. While the former has a PCI Express interface with 16 lanes, for Type 2 signals such as SATA, USB 3.0 and LPC are available instead . In 2015, a "Onebank" variant was introduced for PCI / 104-Express and PCIe / 104 . This uses a smaller, less expensive bus connector that is compatible with the full-size PCIe / 104 connector used and thus creates space for additional components on the board.
The form factors EBX and EPIC also provide for the use of PC / 104-compatible modules.
In 2006, global sales of PC / 104 modules were still US $ 80.1 million compared to PC / 104-Plus modules with US $ 22.5 million.
