The class SP45 locomotives of the Polish State Railways (PKP) were diesel locomotives for the transportation of passenger trains and express trains . Part of the series was converted to the SU45 series . The CEL purchased three identical locomotives.

SP45 series

In 1967 the first prototype of a new series of diesel-electric locomotives in the performance class below the ST43 and ST44 series was completed at Cegielski in Poznan . It received the type designation 301D and the designation SU45-001 (later changed to SP45-001), but was not adopted by the PKP.

Another prototype with the designation 301Da, the number SP45-002 and a length over buffers of 18.99 meters compared to 19.24 meters for the 301D prototype was manufactured in 1968 and adopted by the PKP as the SP45-500.

In 1970 series production of the SP45 series began under the type designation 301Db. The numbers SP45-001 and -002 were reassigned, and a total of 265 locomotives were built by 1976.

Due to the built-in steam heating, which the ST43 and ST44 series, which are primarily intended for freight traffic, do not have, the SP45 series was primarily intended for passenger and express train traffic.

The decommissioning of the SP45 series began as early as 1975 after accidents. From 1988 191 SP45s were converted into SU45s (see below). The conversion ended in 1998, the remaining SP45s were retired by 1999.

SU45 series

Last operational SU45 in Krzyż Wielkopolski

In 1988 the SP45-074 was fitted with an electric heater. From 1989 the series conversion of another 190 SP45 began. The converted locomotives are referred to as the SU45 series to distinguish them. The conversion was completed on September 30, 1997 with SP45-061.

In 2004 there were still 166 SU45s in stock, in mid-2008 around 70 locomotives were still operational and a large number of them were parked before the deadline. The universal locomotives were rarely used in freight traffic, at the beginning of 2008 the SU45 could be seen regularly in front of freight trains in the ZT Poznań and Bydgoszcz (on the Gniezno – Stawiany, Toruń – Chełmża, Toruń – Sierpc routes).

SU45-115 was sold to SKPL in 2016 and has been waiting for a new revision ever since. 141 and 165 were sold to Unikol. The SU45-079 was the last operational machine, it retired on January 20, 2017 with an engine failure.

ST45 series

Since 2009, at least 18 locomotives of the SU45 series have been converted into a new ST45 series. These received a 12-cylinder MTU-4000 exchange engine with 1,500 kW and were assigned to PKP Cargo . A train heater is no longer available.

CEL 1201-1203

The Chemins de fer l'Etat Libanais (Lebanese State Railways) ordered three type 301Dc locomotives from HCP in 1974. This was identical to the type 301Db and thus the SP45 series of the PKP. The locomotives were tested under the designations 301Dc 225L to 227L and delivered in 1977. After the takeover by the CEL, they were given the numbers 1201 to 1203.
