The PLL-05 (export designation WMA029 ) is a Chinese 120 mm tank mortar , which was developed by the armaments manufacturer Norinco on the basis of the WZ551 (6 × 6).

Development history

The concept of a comparable wheel-based tank mortar was developed in the Soviet Union with the 2S23 Nona SVK in the 1980s. Although it was not officially exported, the People's Republic of China may have succeeded in obtaining the 2S23 from a third country and developing its own tank mortar based on this model.

The PLL-05 was first made available by Norinco in 2001 for the export market . A total of ten PLL-05 were sold to Tanzania in 2014 . An improved variant with a redesigned tower was adopted by the People's Liberation Army . The PLL-05 is located in artillery regiments of the light (wheel-based) mechanized infantry divisions, in which 18 vehicles form a mortar battalion .

Armament

The main armament of the PLL-05 is a 120 mm caliber mortar equipped with a vertical slide-lock mechanism. The ammunition is fed semi-automatically. The weapon has an elevation range of −4 ° to + 80 ° and a lateral alignment range of 360 °. The maximum firing range is 9.5 km when firing the howitzer projectile , 8.5 km when firing the mortar projectile and 1.2 km when firing HEAT projectiles in flat orbit. The PLL-05 is additionally equipped with a 12.7 mm anti - aircraft type 85 machine gun mounted on the roof of the tower. A row of three smoke capsules are mounted on each side of the tower .

The vehicle is powered by an air-cooled 8-cylinder diesel engine of the type BF8L413F , which generates an output of 235 kW (320 hp) at 2500 rpm. The vehicle can reach a top speed of 85 km / h on paved roads and 8 km / h in water. In the water it is driven by two retractable stern propellers.
