PL25

PL25 stands for Parseval Airship 25. This single-pod military airship was built by the Luftfahrzeug-Gesellschaft in Bitterfeld in 1914/15 and was the last airship designed by August von Parseval . At the same time, it was one of the largest, if not the largest impact airship ever before World War II. The first flight took place on February 25, 1915. The shell was teardrop-shaped and made very slim.

construction

The float had a length of 112.3 m and at its thickest point a diameter of 16.4 m. The lifting gas volume was 14,000 cubic meters. The ship was equipped with two Maybach -CX engines, each with an output of 154 kW (210 hp) on one propeller. They enabled a driving speed of approx. 76 km / h (21 m / s).

A machine gun stand on top of the back of the hydrogen-filled float was used to defend against enemy aircraft .

PL25 was in service with the Navy and undertook a total of 10 test drives. After 41 missions as a reconnaissance aircraft over the North Sea, the ship was used as a training ship on a further 34 voyages from Tondern .

On 29./30. May 1915 it was involved in the advance of the deep sea fleet up to 50 nautical miles north of Schiermonnikoog and on August 9-11, 1915 in the advance into the Bay of Riga . As early as autumn 1915, the Siemens-Schuckert company made torpedo glider tests with the P IV in Berlin-Biesdorf . Trials with the PL 25 followed in Biesdorf, and from July 1, 1916 it was used as a training ship by the army.

It was stationed in Tondern from March 25, 1915 to November 3, 1915 and in Fuhlsbüttel from November 4, 1915 to March 29, 1916 . PL25 commanders were Captain Stelling and Captain Manger.
