The PODIUM Esslingen (formerly: PODIUM - Young European Music Festival Esslingen ) is an artistic initiative that has existed since 2009 and is the organizer of the PODIUM Festival Esslingen, an annual classical music festival in Esslingen am Neckar. In 2010 the PODIUM Festival was awarded an ECHO Klassik and the red dot communication design award for its conceptual and communicative innovations . The initiative is supported by the PODIUM Music Foundation, an operational, non-profit foundation that was established for this purpose in 2013.

history

In 2009 the then students Steven Walter and Adrian-Minh Schumacher initiated the “PODIUM - Young European Music Festival Esslingen” based on the model of the PODIUMfestival in Haugesund (Norway). Together with a volunteer team of students from different disciplines, the founders crystallized the core goals of what they consider to be a modern classical music festival: the creation of creative freedom to experiment with the format of the concert, the bundling of young musical talent into an intensive rehearsal and concert phase, as well as addressing young audiences directly through musical events without conventions. The second edition took place in April 2010 and was already twice as extensive as in the first year. The award of the ECHO Klassik special prize for the promotion of young talent attracted media attention. In 2012, a cooperation was entered into with the Federal Youth Ballet (an initiative by John Neumeier , Hamburg Ballet ). This was continued in 2013 with the creation of a new form of musical theater in the project "Stravinsky: animated - The Story of the Soldier", a combination of music, animation and drama, which reinterpreted Igor Stravinsky's story of the soldier . This production has since been performed as a guest performance at home and abroad. a. in the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and at the Lucerne Festival . The civic interest in strengthening and consolidating the young commitment and the creation of a creative hotspot in Esslingen found its expression in the establishment of the PODIUM Music Foundation. The handover of the deed of foundation by District President Johannes Schmalzl took place at the beginning of the festival in 2013. Since the 2015 season, PODIUM Esslingen has received institutional funding from the state of Baden-Württemberg and the city of Esslingen am Neckar and is intensifying its activities as a production facility for innovative stage projects.

organizer

The activities of PODIUM Esslingen are operationally supported by the non-profit PODIUM music foundation and the non-profit association Podium young musicians e. V. Artistic director and managing director is Steven Walter. Brigitte Russ-Scherer (chairwoman), Lothar Kuhn and Adrian-Minh Schumacher form the foundation's board of directors . The creative core of the activities is the changing team of 10–15 volunteers between the ages of 20–35, who undertake to design the festival program and plan its implementation for one or more seasons. Additional volunteers come to Esslingen for the actual implementation of the festival.

idea

PODIUM Esslingen is a project by and with an international community of young musicians with the self-set goal of presenting music in its emotional and spiritual diversity through innovative concert ideas. This should not only serve classical music lovers, but people of all age groups and their music preferences. In doing so, genre boundaries and classifications in light and serious music are deliberately avoided. Projects should also be initiated which combine several art forms such as dance, theater, film and animation with music and have an overall artistic expression. This also includes the principle of curating concerts, in which the programs are thematically compiled by the creative community, but the visitors do not know which works will be performed before and during the concert. These means try to create an unbiased and moment-related listening experience and thus increase the desire to discover new things.
