Johannes Schmalzl

Johannes Schmalzl (born May 13, 1965 in Würzburg ) is the managing director of the Stuttgart Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry . From 1 January 2008 to 31 May 2016 he was President of the Government of the administrative district of Stuttgart in Baden-Wuerttemberg . Schmalzl is a member of the FDP .

Career

Johannes Schmalzl grew up in Marktbreit am Main , where he graduated from high school in Marktbreit in 1985. After completing basic military service in Lingen an der Ems and in Fuldatal-Rothwesten near Kassel, he studied economics and law in Bamberg, Würzburg, Bonn and Lausanne (Switzerland).

After the first state examination, Schmalzl completed his legal clerkship, including a station at the German Embassy in Tallinn (Estonia). After the second state examination in 1996, he joined the Baden-Württemberg state service in the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Justice .

From 1996 to 1999 Schmalzl was seconded to the Representation of the State of Baden-Württemberg at the federal level as a consultant and representative of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Justice in Bonn and Berlin. In 2000, he was seconded to the Stuttgart public prosecutor's office as a department head in a general department. Schmalzl then headed the central office (management staff, parliamentary and cabinet affairs, Federal Council affairs, press and public relations) in the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Justice under Justice Ministers Ulrich Goll and Corinna Werwigk-Hertneck until 2005 .

In 2005 he was appointed President of the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Baden-Württemberg by the then Prime Minister Günther Oettinger . From January 1, 2008 to May 31, 2016, Johannes Schmalzl was the district president of the Stuttgart district. With over 4 million inhabitants, the Stuttgart administrative region is the largest administrative region in Baden-Württemberg.

In 2011, Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger wanted to appoint Schmalzl as the successor to Monika Harms as Attorney General . After the Brandenburg Public Prosecutor Erardo Cristoforo Rautenberg announced the appointment of the FDP politician in a letter to the Federal Minister of Justice with the words that Schmalzl only “has knowledge in the field of criminal law that is far below the level of the academic staff from the federal states Federal Prosecutor's Office had been harshly criticized in order to guarantee the operation there and to be qualified for promotion offices in the judiciary ”, Schmalzl sent this a private“ indignant e-mail ”in response. The SPD-led states in the Bundesrat did not want to vote for Schmalzl. He withdrew his candidacy on September 23, 2011. On May 31, 2016, Johannes Schmalzl was put into temporary retirement by Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), as was his Tübingen counterpart Jörg Schmidt (SPD).

From October 2016 onwards, Schmalzl headed the privatization, participations and federal real estate department in the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) as ministerial director and successor to Bruno Kahl . In this role he was u. a. Responsible for the legal and technical supervision of the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (BImA) and the corporate investments of the federal government. He was responsible for managing the investments from the BMF area (including Deutsche Telekom AG, Deutsche Post AG). Schmalzl is a member of the supervisory boards of Deutsche Bahn AG (resigned on December 31, 2017), Bundesdruckerei GmbH and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) on behalf of the Federal Government.

On May 31, 2017, Schmalzl was appointed as the new general manager by the general assembly of the Stuttgart Region Chamber of Commerce. He took up this office on November 1, 2017. He represents the interests of the Stuttgart Region Chamber of Industry and Commerce on the supervisory boards of the Stuttgart Exhibition Center and in the economic development of the Stuttgart Region.

Political activity

Johannes Schmalzl came to the FDP through his involvement in university politics. From 1988 to 1990 he was a member of the national board of liberal university groups as press spokesman. For many years he has been working in the Federal Expert Committee on Interior and Legal Policy of the federal party, of which he was director for a considerable time. He is deputy chairman of the state committee for internal and legal policy of the state FDP.

Schmalzl is married and has three children.

Others

Among other things, Johannes Schmalzl is Baden-Württemberg's state chairman of the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge and deputy chairman of the board of trustees of the Hohenheim Catholic Academy of the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese .

Schmalzl has been an honorary member of the A. V. Alania Stuttgart student association since 2012 and President of the Württemberg Economic and Administrative Academy (VWA) since November 2017. He is also a member of the advisory board of the Landesverkehrswacht Baden-Württemberg and is committed to the further development of traffic safety, especially for children and young drivers.
