Brigitte Russ-Scherer

Brigitte Russ-Scherer (* 1956 in Göppingen ) is a German lawyer and politician who is a member of the SPD and was Mayor of Tübingen from January 11, 1999 to January 10, 2007 . She is married to Wolfgang Scherer , judge at the Stuttgart Regional Court .

education and profession

During her law studies, she worked as a freelancer and intern at the Göppingen local editorial team of the Neue Württembergische Zeitung . She then completed a traineeship at Südwest Presse in Ulm , which she successfully completed as an editor in 1981.

From 1981 to the 2nd state examination in the summer of 1984, she completed her legal clerkship before she worked as a judge ( District and Regional Court Heilbronn , District and Regional Court Stuttgart ) and public prosecutor (Stuttgart) from 1984 to 1995 . During this time she was on leave twice, once for participation in the Baden-Württemberg Management Academy (1987–1988) and once for her work at the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival , where she was managing director from 1989 to 1993. During this time Brigitte Russ-Scherer was also a member of the board of the European Festival Association as well as a lecturer in public cultural management at the Ludwigsburg University of Education . She was also on the supervisory board of the Ludwigsburg city marketing company.

From 1995 until she took office as Lord Mayor in January 1999, she was head of the press and public relations department at Allianz Lebensversicherungs AG.

She was admitted to the bar in October 1995.

From 1994 to 1999 Brigitte Russ-Scherer was managing director (honorary) of the Academy for Spoken Word, Stuttgart.

Currently (as of 2017) she is the CEO of the PODIUM Music Foundation in Esslingen am Neckar .

Political activity

In autumn 1998 she was elected mayor of the university town of Tübingen in the second ballot . In the first ballot she was still behind Wolf-Dieter Hasenclever , who ran for the Greens , with 26.6% of the votes cast . In the second ballot, she received 42% of the vote, 1.5% more than Hasenclever. She took office on January 11, 1999 and held it until January 10, 2007. Her successor in 2007 was the Green Boris Palmer , who received 50.4% of the vote in the first round of mayoral elections in October 2006 and thus prevailed against Russ-Scherer. Russ-Scherer received 30.2% of the vote.

As Mayor of Tübingen, she pursued the following strategic goals:

  • Expansion of the science location
  • Preservation of the lively, historic old town
  • Strengthening the cultural city of Tübingen
  • Implementation of the administrative reform
  • Local Agenda 21 with the commitment to sustainable development

From 2003 to 2007 Russ-Scherer was honorary president of the German Library Association , as such she also chaired the jury for the Library of the Year award . Between 2004 and 2007 she was President of the Working Group of European Prize Cities.
