PRoVisG

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

PRoVisG (Planetary Robotics Vision Ground Processing) is a collaborative project within the seventh framework program of the European Commission . PRoVisG aims to bring together EU and US research institutions and interest groups working in the areas of robotic vision and navigation. The aim is to develop a unified and general approach to processing robotic reconnaissance missions. The project started on October 1st, 2008; the project duration should be 39 months.

aims

The goals of the project include the establishment of a uniform European system for processing planetary visual data, the further development of existing technology in order to be able to process and display future and existing data from planetary missions better and to increase the public's awareness of planetary robotic missions and to underline the European role in scientific evaluation.

Project description

Within the framework of PRoVisG, robotic planetary space missions are defined as unmanned missions that carry out on-site explorations of surfaces and atmospheres of planetary objects outside the earth. Most missions of this type use mobile devices such as surface vehicles, rovers, or flying devices such as balloons or aerobots. It is the mobile devices that are most critical to such a mission. They demand fast processing of image data and an appropriate representation of the results on earth (for example in the control centers) in order to guarantee effective planning of the ongoing mission and to be able to make maximum use of the usually limited service life of the vehicles.

The PRoVisG consortium sees that the number and forms of such robotic platforms will increase in the future and that more autonomy than currently appears possible will be necessary. PRoVisG provides the building blocks for future autonomous exploration systems with regard to robotic visualization.

The project will develop a unified and generic approach to Robotic Vision soil processing. The exchange of algorithms and methods is carried out in such a way that a tool is available at all times during mission development and implementation that is state-of-the-art European computer vision. The implementation or adaptation of computer vision processing components is carried out within the framework of the project in order to provide a processing chain for this purpose.

One of the main results will be an internet-based geographic information system (GIS) which allows a comprehensive data processing chain to be called up and the results, processing steps and metadata to be visualized. A user should be able to see where the processed data were recorded, from how many observation points they were acquired, which areas the data covered and which instruments were used. These results should be brought into a temporal and spatial context of the processing results .
