PaRappa the Rapper ( Japanese パ ラ ッ パ ラ ッ パ ー , Parapparappā ), also known as "PaRappaRappa", and "PaRappa the Rappa" is a rhythm video game for the PlayStation . It was developed by Masaya Matsuura and his company NanaOn-Sha. It was released in Japan on December 6, 1996, in North America on October 31, 1997, and in Europe in September 1997. It was one of the first rhythm video games. While the gameplay is very simple in some levels, the game is especially remarkable for its special graphics, sound and bizarre story. Although the game was developed in Japan, all songs and dialogues are in English. The game is named after the name of the protagonist Parappa, a rapping dog with the motto “I gotta believe!”.

In 1999 a spin-off called UmJammer Lammy followed for the PlayStation and in 2001 the sequel PaRappa the Rapper 2 for the PlayStation 2 . An implementation of the game for the PlayStation Portable game console was published in 2006 in Japan. In addition, a 30-part anime series of the same name was produced by JCStaff and Production IG , which was broadcast on Fuji Television in 2001 .

action

The player slips into the role of Parappa, a wafer-thin rapping dog. He tries to win the heart of Sunny Funny, a flower-like girl. He is supported by his friends Katy Kat (an enthusiastic cat) and PJ Berri (a fat teddy bear DJ with a big appetite). Parappa's antagonist is Joe Chin, a rich and narcissistic dog who is also interested in Sunny Funny. To impress Sunny Funny, Parappa learns to fight in the kung fu dojo and takes a driving lesson to obtain his license. But he breaks his father's car and has to earn the money to repair it at the flea market. Parappa makes cake on Sunny's birthday, but ruins him after meeting Joe. Then he makes a new cake on a cooking show, but eats too much of it. After that he is alone with Sunny for a while, but urgently needs to go to the toilet. Parappa now has to rap against his teachers to get first place in line. Then one night Parappa is invited to the Fun Club and asks Sunny to go with him. She agrees. Parappa then raps with everyone on stage and uses the song to express his feelings for Sunny.

reception

At the first annual Interactive Achievement Awards in 1998, the game was recognized by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences with an award in each of the categories Outstanding Achievement in Interactive Design and Outstanding Achievement in Sound and Music , and was also in the main Interactive Title of category the Year nominated. The US online game magazine GameSpot added the game to its list of top 10 rhythm games in 2006 as a genre-defining game.
