Paard van Marken is a lighthouse on the Dutch peninsula of Marken . He stands on a headland in the Markermeer . Since the building looks like a horse from a distance and with a little imagination, it is called Paard van Marken ( German horse of brands ).
description
The first beacon on Marken was put into operation in 1700. It was part of a chain of lighthouses on what was then the Zuiderzee , of which only De Ven has survived . Today's round tower was built from clinker brick in 1839 according to plans by J. Valk and the beacon was officially put into operation on November 14, 1839. Since January 14, 1970 the lighthouse ( Dutch Vuurtoren ) has been recognized as a Rijksmonument .
The exposed location is particularly exposed to spray water icing during winter storms . The original house for the beacon keepers was completely destroyed by ice in 1879. The current residential building was also badly damaged in 1900 and in 1971 the ice reached to the roof.
The beacon has a fire height m of 16 and shows an identifier an interrupted white light with a recurrence of eight seconds (Oc.W.8s). The optics were replaced in 1992 and the fog horn was taken out of service in 2001.
