Pach Brothers was an American photo studio founded in 1868 by the German-born brothers Gustavus, Gotthelf and Morris Pach. It had its headquarters in New York at various locations until 1994 .

history

The first photographers and founders of the Pach Brothers studio in New York were Gustavus Pach (1848–1904), Gotthelf Pach (1852–1925) and Morris Pach (1837–1914). The brothers, who were born in Berlin, came to New York as babies and began their photographic careers as young people in the mid-1860s; they took residents on the streets adjacent to their home, as their obituaries later reported in newspapers. The photo studio jointly founded in Long Branch in 1868 gave the brothers the opportunity to make portraits of the wealthy families of George W. Childs and Anthony Joseph Drexel from Philadelphia and his friend Ulysses S. Grant , President of the United States from 1869. They supported the establishment of the studio on the grounds of the United States Hotel with the mobile, horse-drawn darkroom . A fourth brother, Oscar Pach (1850-1903) came to the United States in 1873 and worked for the company as a business manager. The Pach Brothers also took photos of people from all walks of life in their studio with subsequent generations, including politicians, business people, scientists and artists as well as families and their children as well as of buildings and works of art.

On February 16, 1895, a devastating fire broke out in the studio, at which time the rooms were on the top floor of the building at 535 and 537 Broadway . There were no injuries, but the entire negative archive in which the fire broke out was destroyed. However, Pach Brothers continued their work for nearly a century until 1994.

The New York Historical Society , New York holds an extensive collection of photographs by the Pach Brothers .

A son of Gotthelf Pach was Walter Pach , an American artist, exhibition organizer and art critic. He worked as a colorist in the Pach studio from 1909 to 1914 and was one of the organizers of the legendary Armory Show , which opened in New York in 1913.
