Pachycereus militaris is a species of the genus Pachycereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). A common name is "Grenadier's Cap". The specific epithet militaris means 'warlike, strongly reinforced, spiked'.

description

Pachycereus militaris grows like a tree with greyish green, initially individual columnar shoots that later branch out. It reaches heights of growth of 12 to 15 meters and a crown diameter of up to 5 meters. On the 11 to 14 ribs seated areolae are close together and are covered with a short wool and white woolly hair. 3 to 4 protruding, yellowish to brownish central spines arise from the areoles, one of which is often over 10 centimeters long. The 10 to 12 radial spines are flexible, bristle-like and 1.5 to 4 inches long. A cap-shaped pseudocephalium made of yellowish-brown wool develops at the shoot tips , which is up to 30 centimeters long and up to 20 centimeters in diameter.

The flowers appear laterally from the pseudocephalium and open at night. They are reddish to cream-colored, 5 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 3.5 to 4 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with small scales, tufts of wool and bristles. The elongated fruits are fleshy and dry when ripe. They are covered in scales, bristles, and long tufts of woolly hair.
