Paddy Whannel

Atholl Douglas (Paddy) Whannel (born October 1922 in Pitlochry , Perthshire, Scotland, † July 8, 1980 in London ) was a media theorist .

The son of Douglas and Margaret (Sutherland) Whannel attended local schools from 1927-37, then worked as a projectionist at Pitlochry's Regal Cinema until 1942 and served in the Royal Navy until 1945.

In 1946 he began his studies at Alnwick College of Education, received a teaching diploma in 1948 and attended the University of London from 1948-53, where he obtained a diploma in art history.

From 1948–57 he taught history, art, social studies, and mass media at two schools in the Greater London area. 1957-71 he was at the British Film Institute , where he soon became head of the education department and from the summer of 1969 taught at Northwestern University .

In 1971 he was visiting professor for film at the university and from 1972 associate professor for film at the Northwestern Faculty, where he developed the curriculum for the radio, television and film department. From 1975 he headed the film department and in 1977 he became full professor.
