The Pagenstecherstraße is a four-lane arterial road in Osnabrück . Almost in its entirety it belongs to the Hafen district , only the building with the house number 155 is counted in the official city map of the Eversburg district .

Location and characteristics

The street, to which Pagenstecherstraße belongs, leads from the old town to the Osnabrück-Hafen junction of the A1 motorway and continues in the direction of Westerkappeln . As Pagenstecher road the road between the intersections is Wachsbleiche at the southeast end and Atterstraße named in the northwest corner.

In Osnabrück's vernacular, the street is nicknamed “Automeile”, as several car and auto parts dealers and workshops as well as car washes and gas stations are located there. It also serves as part of a commercial area of the local supply of the surrounding neighborhoods and next to it also has some specialty stores, service businesses and restaurants, including branches of several major fast food chains.

Special residents

The headquarters of Wessels + Müller AG , now WM SE , which was created in 2001 through a merger of Wessels AG and Hans Müller GmbH & Co. KG , is based on Pagenstecherstraße , according to its own information, one of the largest vehicle parts wholesalers in Europe with around 5200 employees about 230 locations.

At the point where the street An der Bornau branches off in a south-easterly direction from Pagenstecherstraße, it borders on the property of the German Federal Environment Foundation for a few meters .

Origin and pronunciation of the street name

The street was named after the traditional German Pagenstecher family.

The word part “Pagen-” is pronounced by many non-Osnabrückers, but also by some locals, like the plural of the word “Page” ( hotel servant ), ie with a voiced postalveolar fricative (as in “Gara g e”). This also applies to the widespread short form of the name of the street, which in Osnabrück is often referred to as "the Page". However, the correct pronunciation is with a voiced lost plosive (as in " G ott").

The Pagenstecherstrasse and the car tuning scene

Pagenstecherstraße is known nationwide as an important meeting point for the tuning scene , and sometimes illegal car races take place there .

As the actual show miles the members consider the scene about one kilometer long, candles straight section between the junction with the Romans Eschenstraße and the road width Güntke the west and exit on to the road at the Bornau the east. The parking spaces of the car dealerships and fast-food restaurants serve as meeting points.

Rotating barriers in Pagenstecherstrasse

As usual in the tuning scene, the holiday Good Friday , which is reinterpreted as Car Friday , marks the start of the season, for which up to 4,000 spectators came to Osnabrück in 2001 and lined the roadside. In recent years, however, the number of spectators has fallen sharply due to the intervention of the police, so from 2007 there were only a few hundred who were also checked at numerous police barriers.

In order to prevent illegal street races, the police are constantly trying out new concepts. For example, several construction waste containers were distributed along the entire length of the carriageway before they were replaced by permanently installed, fold-out barriers. Attempts have also been made with steel sleepers, which not only make the road impassable for lowered vehicles, but also damage unmodified vehicles.

The current concept of the police provides, among other things, to release only one lane per direction on Car Friday and to control the access.

Redesign to a bicycle-friendly street

On January 17, 2020, there was a serious traffic accident on Pagenstecherstrasse. An 18-year-old cyclist suffered fatal injuries when, driving towards the city, fell on the high board cycle path in the area of the property with house number 145, fell on the road and was rolled over by a truck shortly afterwards. The exact cause of the accident cannot be explained, but culpable behavior by the truck driver has been ruled out by the police. The accident led to a local political discussion, at the end of which a large majority in the city council decided to convert Pagenstecherstraße into a bicycle-friendly street. A continuous cycle path at least two meters wide is to be created by spring 2021 at the earliest. For this purpose, parking spaces along the street should be eliminated and trees should also be felled.
