Pain au chocolat

A "pain au chocolat"

In France, two types of pastry are known as pain au chocolat :

  • a baguette that is filled with a chocolate bar after baking
  • a kind of chocolate croissant

The Pain au chocolat in Südfwestfrankreich chocolatine called, is a French pastry made of puff pastry or puff pastry with a chocolate filling . The Danish pastry used for pains au chocolat has the same composition as the one used to bake croissants . Although not shaped as a croissant, some manufacturers in Germany offer it as a “chocolate croissant”.

The Pain au chocolat is popular with children and is considered in France as a symbol of break bread for students. The French chef Alain Ducasse called it "the undisputed masterpiece of French pastry ".

Designations

There are two names for the pastry, which are geographically distributed differently. The border ( Isogloss ) for this runs between La Rochelle and Béziers . South of this line the name chocolatine is used, north of it pain au chocolat.
