Painavu ( Malayalam : പൈനാവ് Paināvŭ [ ˈpai̯nɑːʋɯ ]; less often Painav ) is a place in the southern Indian state of Kerala and the administrative seat of the Idukki district . It is located around 100 kilometers east of Kochi in the mountains of the Western Ghats at an altitude of around 800 meters on the north bank of the Idukki reservoir . Idukki Township , which gives the Idukki district its name, is just three kilometers to the east .
The Painavu settlement came into being during the construction of the Idukki Dam (1969–1976) in the previously remote mountain and forest area. In 1976 the place was designated as the district headquarters. Today, in addition to the district administration, the Government Engineering College Idukki is located in Painavu .
