Pak Taewon (born December 7, 1909 in Seoul , Korea , † July 10, 1986 in Pyongyang , North Korea ) was a South Korean writer and poet .

Life

Pak Taewon was born on December 7, 1909 in Seoul , Korea . His stage name is Kubo (구보 | 丘 甫). He attended the 1st Kyŏngsŏng High School and began his studies at Hosei University in Japan in 1930 , but dropped out without a degree. He made his debut as a poet while still in high school, when his work Big Sister (누님) was awarded in a competition. He made his debut as a writer in 1929 with the short story The Beard (수염), which was published in the magazine " Neues Leben " (신생). In 1930 he joined the " Circle of the Nine " (구인회 | 九 人 會) and from then on devoted himself more to writing novels. After the liberation in 1945 he became a member of the Central Committee of the Association of Writers of Korea (조선 문학가 동맹 의 중앙 집행 위원). During the Korean War he moved to North Korea and died there on July 10, 1986 .

A modernist who boldly combined experimental techniques with meticulous craftsmanship, he was more concerned with aestheticism and expression than with the ideas that were supposed to be expressed. In his early works he tried to construct a new style of writing, e.g. B. by using symbols and graphics from newspaper advertisements or commas. As a member of the "Circle of Nine", like Yi Sang , he rejected trend literature and emphasized the importance of viewing literature as a linguistic art and not as a medium to convey ideologies. In the late 1930s he concentrated increasingly on the habits and idiosyncrasies of the time and ultimately lost interest in trying out new stylistic devices. After the liberation he dealt with historical topics and problems of national identity and wrote almost exclusively historical novels.
