Yi Sang , also: Yisang , (born September 14, 1910 in Seoul , † April 17, 1937 in Tokyo ) was a Korean writer .

Life

Yi Sang, born Kim Hae-gyŏng in Seoul, graduated from Gyeongseong High School for Technology, Architecture Department in 1929 and then worked as a draftsman for the Japanese Government General .

In 1929 he won a design competition for the design of the cover of Chosŏn kŏnch'uk ( 조선 건축 Korean Architecture) and the cover design of the magazine Chosŏn kŏnch'ukhoe ( 조선 건축 회 Korean Society for Architecture). In 1930 he made his debut with his short story December 12th in the magazine Chos ( n (Korea). In 1931 company holidays and other circumstances appeared ( 휴직 과 사정 ). The same year he published a number written in Japanese poems as strange backlash ( 이상한 가역 반응 ) or view the Crow ( 오감도 烏瞰圖 ).

From 1933 on, Yi Sang gave up his work due to increasing symptoms of tuberculosis and devoted himself entirely to literature. In 1936 he traveled to Japan , where he was arrested by the police. Due to his imprisonment, his health deteriorated rapidly. He was released on bail and admitted to Tokyo University Hospital, where he eventually died.

Yi Sang was hardly known during his lifetime. It was not until 1950, when his works were reissued, that he achieved a high degree of popularity. The story Flügel , which has been translated into several languages, is particularly well known . The Yi Sang Literature Prize named after him is one of the most important awards for South Korean authors.
