Palácio da Alvorada
The Palácio da Alvorada (pronunciation: paˈlasju da awvoˈɾadɐ , German Palace of Dawn ) in Brasília is located on a peninsula in Lake Paranoá . The palace has been the official residence of the Brazilian presidents since Juscelino Kubitschek . It was the first government building designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer in the modern style on the Planalto plateau , in the geographical center of Brazil, made of snow-white marble , glass and water. It was built between 1957 and 1958 and completed two years before the official "opening" of Brasília.
The palace is not open to the public.
meaning
The Alvorada Palace is one of the most important buildings of Brazilian architecture of the Modern . Because of its harmonious proportions, it is considered the real jewel of Brasília. Concrete slabs hold a rectangular glass box, with Niemeyer dividing the loggias, alluding to the typical old colonial houses, by boomerang-shaped arcades. The curved concrete columns are intended to be reminiscent of the hammocks that are typical in the country.
Naming
Originally the building was supposed to be simply named "Presidential Palace", but after Juscelino Kubitschek said in a speech:
"Que é Brasília, senão a alvorada de um novo dia para o Brasil?", Translated: "What is Brasília if not the dawn of a new day for Brazil?" "
the term “Palace of Dawn” became popular.
The Alvorada Palace has a horizontal construction, completed by a chapel ( “Capela da Alvorada” ) built into the garden , which correlates with the old fazendas of colonial Brazil . The special shape of the external pillars resembles those of the hammocks lined up on the balconies, as was also common in colonial buildings. The design of the supports led to the symbol and emblem on the coat of arms of the federal district .
The building
The Palácio da Alvorada covers an area of 7,000 m 2 and, on three floors, houses the president's private quarters, a cinema, a library with over 3400 books from various literary areas, administrative space and its own medical care.
- Basement with an auditorium for 30 people, a playroom, warehouse, storage room, kitchen, laundry and administration;
- Ground floor with rooms for official events of the President of the Republic and those of government officials;
- First floor with the living part of the palace, consisting of four suites and one private room.
The palace has a rectangular water mirror that reflects the building and thus creates a seemingly infinite virtual space for the guest, complemented by a group of bronze sculptures called As Banhistas ("The Bathers"), created by the Brazilian sculptor Alfredo Ceschiatti .
