Alfredo Ceschiatti
Alfredo Ceschiatti (born September 1, 1918 in Belo Horizonte , † August 25, 1989 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian sculptor , designer and university professor .
Life
Alfredo Ceschiatti was the son of Italian parents in Belo Horizonte. In 1937 he received a scholarship for the children of Italian immigrants and in 1938 he traveled to Italy, where he discovered Michelangelo and the painters of the Renaissance . After his return to Brazil in 1940, he joined the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro to finally devote himself to sculpture . In the third year, however, he left the course.
He took part in the Salão Nacional in 1943 , won the bronze medal and the silver medal the following year . At the invitation of his friend, the architect Oscar Niemeyer , he designed the bas-relief on the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Pampulha , a district of Belo Horizonte . This work earned him a travel grant, the Prêmio de Viagem ao Estrangeiro .
He stayed in Europe from 1946 to 1948 , where he familiarized himself with the work of the sculptors Max Bill , Henri Laurens , Giacomo Manzù and above all Aristide Maillol . On his return he exhibited at the Instituto de Arquitetos do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro, and also took part in the second São Paulo Biennale and the second National Salon of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro.
In 1956 he won the competition for the Memorial to the Dead of World War II , which turned out to be one of the defining postcard views of Rio, as did The Bathers in the Gardens of the Presidential Palace in Brasília . At the invitation of Oscar Niemeyer, whose permanent collaborator he had meanwhile become, he designed the angels ( Os Anjos ) at the Cathedral of Brasilia and the granite sculpture A Justiça in front of the Supreme Court on the Square of the Three Powers in Brasília.
Alfredo Ceschiatti was Associate Professor of Sculpture and Design at the University of Brasilia from 1963 until its closure in 1965 , but then resigned from his post out of solidarity with the other teachers.
His sculptures can be seen in the Oscar-Niemeyer-Haus in Berlin , a residential complex in the Hansaviertel , designed by Oscar Niemeyer, as well as on the Patriarch's Square in São Paulo , at the Brazilian Embassy in Moscow , and in the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro and in several private collections.
