Georg Karl of Hesse

Georg Karl von Hessen-Kassel (born January 14, 1793 in Maastricht , † March 4, 1881 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a general in the service of the Kingdom of Prussia and the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel .

Life

family

Georg Karl was prince of the Hessen-Rumpenheim line of the Hessian princely house . His parents were the general in the service of Denmark, the Netherlands and Hesse Kassel Friedrich von Hessen-Kassel zu Rumpenheim (1747-1837) and Princess Karoline Polyxene von Nassau-Usingen (1762-1823). He remained unmarried and left no heirs.

Career

Georg Karl began his career in 1802 as captain à la suite of the Hessian dragoon regiment "Prinz Friedrich". In 1809 he entered the service of the same rank in Danish , in 1810 he was à la suite with the king's regiment and in 1810 was knight of the House Order of the Golden Lion . In 1813 he received his departure from the Danish service.

As a lieutenant colonel he entered Russian service in 1814 , took part in the wars of liberation , taking part in the battles at Laon , Montmirail , Bar sur Aube and La Fère Champenoise and was awarded the Order of Vladimir IV class .

In 1815 he entered Prussian services and was aggregated as a lieutenant colonel in the Brandenburg Uhlan Regiment . In the same year he became a knight of the order Pour la vertu militaire . He was aggregated to the Guard Cuirassier Regiment in 1817 , advanced to Colonel in 1818 and at the end of March 1826 was given the command of the 5th Uhlan Regiment . In mid-February 1827, Georg Karl was given command of the 5th Cavalry Brigade and advanced to major general at the end of March 1827 . In 1831 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 1st Class with Oak Leaves, before 1833 with the Grand Cross of the Guelph Order and in 1834 with the Order of Saint Anna 1st Class with diamonds. In 1835 he became the commander of the 5th Division , received the service cross in 1836 and advanced to lieutenant general in 1839 . In 1840 he became governor of Magdeburg . In 1841 he became a knight of the Elephant Order and in 1845 received the Grand Cross of the Hessian Order of Ludwig . In 1848 he was allowed to leave Prussian service. He was then Elector General of Hesse à la suite in 1852 and was promoted to Elector of Hesse General of the Cavalry à la suite in 1858 .
