Palais Mercy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Palais Mercy ( Romanian Casa Contelui de Mercy ), also House Mercy , is a listed historical building in the center of the western Romanian city of Timișoara , in Strada Proclamația de la Timișoara, No. 7.

history

The Palais Mercy was designed as the seat of the Governor of the Banat , Claudius Florimund Mercy , immediately after the Austrian siege and capture of what was then Timişoara, which was part of the Ottoman Empire in 1717. However, it did not get its current shape until 1737. Mercy fell in an attack on the Crocetta fortress near Parma in 1734 , so that he no longer saw the completion of this building.

In the following years the building served as a bishopric and from 1800 as a courthouse. The building now houses a bank.

description

The one-storey building, kept in the eclectic style with neoclassical elements, is architecturally simple, both inside and on the facade. There is a balcony above the arched entrance area to the inner courtyard, which is framed by two columns.

The Deschan Palace is to the left of the Palais and the Bega Shopping Center is on the opposite side of the street .
