The Palace of the Republic ( Belarusian Палац Рэспублікі Palaz Respubliki or Russian Дворец Республики Dvorets Respubliki ) is a building on October Square in the Belarusian capital Minsk and the central location for major political and cultural events in Belarus. It is also used for international forums, conferences, exhibitions and concerts.

history

The idea of ​​a “ cultural palace of the republic” was put forward in the 1980s by Pyotr Masherov , the first chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Belarusian SSR . In 1982, a design competition for the Palace of the Republic was held, which was won by the state institute Belgosproject. In 1984 a team of architects consisting of M. Pirahou, W. Danilau, L. Sdanewitsch, L. Maskalewitsch, W. Nowikau, N. Turljuk, W. Ussimau and A. Schabalin began with the architectural design of the Palace of Culture and the surrounding October Square . Construction on the palace began in 1985, but was suspended for several years due to the collapse of the Soviet Union and deteriorating economic situation. Work resumed in 1995. The building was partially put into operation on October 3, 1997 and fully completed on December 31, 2001.

The Palast der Republik has a large hall with 2,700 seats. The small hall offers space for 470 people and the conference room for 70 people. The building's press center has space for 30 journalists. The building also houses a café, a bar and various lobby and exhibition rooms.
