Palazzo Barbarigo Nani Mocenigo

Palazzo Barbarigo Nani Mocenigo is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Dorsoduro sestiere on Fondamento Nani with a view of the Rio di San Trovaso across from the Squero San Trovaso slipway .

history

The palace dates back to the 15th century and was the residence of the Barbarigo family .

It was part of the dowry that Elena Barbarigo , daughter of Doge Agostino Barbarigo , brought into her marriage to Giorgio Nani . From the couple the palace passed to the son Bernardo Nani , founder of the family branch "di San Trovaso".

In the first half of the 19th century the Nanis di San Trovaso died out and the distant relatives Nani Mocenigo , who had previously lived in a palace on the Fondamenta di Cannaregio , moved into the complex .

Part of the building still belongs to this branch of the family, while the other part was bought by the University of Venice , which has housed its “Chair for Italian Studies” there with an attached library. Since 2007 the humanistic branch of the "Faculty of Languages and Philosophy" has been brought together in the Palazzo Malcanton Marcorà and the palace stood empty and was occasionally rented out to "upscale" tourists.

description

The palace is a perfect example of Gothic architecture in Venice of the 14th and 15th centuries, which finds its ultimate completion in the Ca 'Bernardo .

The facade over three full floors and a mezzanine floor has two Gothic portals on the ground floor, the larger one in the middle and the smaller one on the left. The two main floors have quadruple windows in the middle, each flanked by two pairs of single windows. All windows have keel arches . The quadruple windows are equipped with protruding balconies.

On the right side of the roof there is a terrace from which one has a good view of the Church of San Trovaso and the one around the Canale della Giudecca .
