Palazzo Nani

Palazzo Nani is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Cannaregio sestiere on the Fondamenta di Cannaregio , opposite the Palazzo Savorgnan .

history

The complex was built in the 16th century as the residence of the Cannaregio branch of the Nani family (formerly: Nani Mocenigo ). It was rebuilt as early as the 1580s under the direction of the architect Alessandro Vittoria . He owes the entire interior design of the palace.

In its prime, the Palazzo Nani housed a rich art collection consisting of works from Roman antiquity . Two large statues of consuls were placed on both sides of the entrance portal .

The Nanis stayed there until 1810 when they moved to the Palazzo Barbarigo Nani Mocenigo in San Trovaso . In the following years the palace began to decline and suffered severe manipulation: in 1859 it was occupied by the Austrian army, which turned it into a barracks, after which it became a school. In the meantime, the works of art in the collection have been gradually removed and scattered.

In 2002 the palace was completely restored.

description

The Palazzi Nani extends over three full floors (including the ground floor) plus a mezzanine floor .

The façade, which is now rather unadorned, appears asymmetrical due to the interventions of the 19th century when the building was extended to the right. Apart from that, the window layout is very regular and based on five axes, of which the middle one is highlighted on the upper floors by simple quadruple windows. Those on the main floors have protruding balconies. Next to the quadruple window on the first floor there are two stone heraldic panels.

The rich interior decoration with stucco and frescoes , which have been well preserved in the Protego (reception room) on the first floor, is thanks to the intervention of Vittoria . The palace used to have a garden, which is now overbuilt.
