Palazzo Genovese is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Dorsoduro sestiere overlooking the Grand Canal between the Palazzetto Nani Mocenigo and the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute . The back of the building to the Church of San Gregorio

history

The palace was built in 1892 according to plans by the architect Edoardo Trigomi Mattei as the Venetian residence of the Genovese family . After a long period of decay in the second half of the 20th century, a thorough restoration was completed in 2009 with conversion into a luxury hotel.

During this restoration, some archaeologically valuable elements came to light: In addition to the remains of the monastery of San Gregorio , there were also remains of wooden residential buildings from the 9th century and a stone house from the 7th century.

description

The architectural style of this building of impressive size is an example of the Venetian Gothic Revival . These are clearly stylistic elements that Edoardo Trigomi Mattei from Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti took up again.

The building extends over three floors and has a symmetrical facade facing the Grand Canal. Each floor shows four single Gothic windows on each side in stone frames. In the middle of the ground floor there is a triple pointed arch portal to the water, flanked by three three-pass single windows on each side. In contrast, on the two main floors there are two six - fold three-pass windows with four-pass windows inserted in between (on the first floor) or three- pass windows (on the second floor), one above the other, flanked by three individual windows on each side. All windows on the first floor have protruding balconies, as do the four outer ones on the second floor. The six-fold window on the second floor is provided with balusters . The motifs of these windows quote those of the first main floor of the Doge's Palace .

The rear facade of the palace, which can be seen from the small square by the church of San Gregorio, looks out onto a small courtyard with a fountain, delimited by a wall. It takes up the scheme of the main facade, but with less ornate elements; it is only decorated with half-reliefs on the first floor.
