Palazzo Reale (Altofonte)
The Palazzo Reale in Altofonte in Sicily , also called Palazzo di Parco, was a castle of the Norman kings of Sicily . It was in the part of the royal park that stretched west of the old town of Palermo .
history
The castle was built in the first half of the 12th century under Roger II , who was the first king of Sicily . In the 14th century, the monastery of Santa Maria Altofonte was built over the remains of the palace .
description
From the original castle only a few rooms with cross vaults on the ground floor of the monastery and three arches of a portico are preserved. In addition, there is the Capella di San Michele Arcangelo, the palace chapel dedicated to St. Michael. It is a single-nave rectangular room with a main apse , two small side apses and a dome over the presbytery separated from the main nave by an arch .
