Palazzo Zane Collalto

Palazzo Zane Collalto is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the San Polo sestiere with a view of the Rio di Sant'Agostin .

history

The palace was started in 1665 by the well-known architect Baldassare Longhena and, after his death, was completed by Antonio Gaspari on behalf of the Zane family . In 1783 the Collalto family took it over .

The Zanes were one of the richest family dynasties in Venice in the 16th century. Longhena designed a facade, but to a lesser extent it was reminiscent of some formal solutions of other facades by the same architect. This applies in particular to the window layout, which is similar to that of Ca 'Pesaro , another well-known work by Longhena.

A school is currently housed in the well-preserved building. The province of Veneto has taken care of the preservation of a part in recent years.

An important restoration concerned the Palazzetto Bru Zane , an outbuilding of the complex, but very characteristic. It is a 17th-century building in the beautiful garden that housed a casino for gambling and a family library. Today it houses a foundation for romantic French music and the building is open to the public.

description

The facade of the Palazzo Zane Collalto, clad in white Istrian limestone , has a ground floor and two main floors above.

On the left side of the facade are the remains of an earlier, smaller building with two floors. The facade is symmetrical and has two wide arched portals to the water.

Above are the two main floors, the finest elements of which are the two five-ply arched windows in the middle and all of which have a large mascaron on the keystone , an element that also adorns the individual windows on the sides, from which the middle element is located differs by balusters . Those on the first floor protrude, while those on the second level are the same as the facade.

The garden from the 17th century, which was placed behind the main building and is accessible via a portal to the water, is also important in the composition of the building. In the garden is the Ca 'Zane Casino, a building dedicated to games and studies, with a ballroom on the ground floor and finely decorated and frescoed rooms. The frescoes are attributed to Sebastiano Ricci .
