Palazzetto Bru Zane

Palazzetto Bru Zane is the name of the Center de musique romantique française (Center for French Romantic Music) and its headquarters, a small palace in San Polo , Venice . The organization is dedicated to promoting the music of forgotten or lesser-known French composers from around 1780 to 1920 . The activities of the foundation , established in 2009, are financed by the Fondation Bru of the French doctor and patron Nicole Bru.

The palazzetto

Between 1695 and 1697, Marino Zane (1639–1709) had a smaller library (not preserved) and a casino (Italian for 'small house, country house'; today the Palazzetto) built next to the palazzo, which was used as a residential building. and a collection of paintings and should serve as a place for art and musical entertainment for the traditional family. The architect Antonio Gaspari enjoyed extensive freedom in the design of the casino, which was furnished with a rich interior. The buildings remained in the possession of the Zane family for a hundred years until the end of the Republic in 1797, and they rented them out to various users over the last few decades.

In 2006 the Fondation Bru bought the Palazzetto and had it completely renovated for several million euros. The aim was, on the one hand, to resurrect the building in the style of its era and, on the other hand, to create a contemporary location for music. The sixteen rooms now include a concert hall with up to a hundred seats and a soundproof rehearsal room. The elaborate frescoes in the salon and the large staircase have been restored.

Foundation activities

The Palazzetto Bru Zane Foundation - Center de musique romantique française pursues its mission through a wide variety of activities, which are also aimed at the musically interested public, performers and a musicological specialist audience. In addition to its headquarters in Venice, the Foundation's work is also carried out in Paris and has a similar approach to the Center de musique baroque de Versailles, founded in 1987 and specializing in the 17th and 18th centuries .

One focus of its activity is the organization of concerts, opera performances and themed festivals across Europe and Canada. Here, we cooperate with various opera and concert halls, performers and ensembles. In addition, partnerships were agreed with competition organizers such as the Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth in order to support young artists dealing with the French romantic repertoire and to give them the opportunity to perform.

The scientific side of the activities includes the regular organization of musicological conferences, including those in cooperation with the Opéra-Comique , the publication of specialist and paperback books as well as the edition of sheet music and performance materials. Numerous first recordings of French operas and instrumental music have been published on sound carriers, some with a detailed accompanying book (see series of publications ). There are collaborations with various labels for CD recordings, which the Palazzetto Bru Zane supports.

Composers whose works were brought back to light through the use of the Palazzetto Bru Zane include, among others (sorted by year of birth) Étienne-Nicolas Méhul , George Onslow , Ferdinand Hérold , Félicien David , Charles-Valentin Alkan , Louis Théodore Gouvy , Théodore Dubois , Benjamin Godard , Florent Schmitt and Reynaldo Hahn . The activities also focus on women composers such as Louise Farrenc , Pauline Viardot-García , Marie Jaëll , Augusta Holmès and Cécile Chaminade .

In addition to these lesser-known people, compositions by composers who are still famous to this day are presented, but their overall works are dominated by individual popular 'masterpieces'; this includes music by Charles Gounod , Camille Saint-Saëns , Jules Massenet , Claude Debussy and Paul Dukas .

Database and internet radio

The Bru Zane Media Base offers articles about people and works of the French musical life of the long 19th century, as well as on various topics such as musical genres, institutions or the instrument since the beginning of 2015 freely available access. Unpublished documents of various archives (the family archives Baillot and Marsick and the Villa Medici ) have been digitized and are also presented in the database as contemporary documents to which iconographic sources, press releases, libretti and personal testimonies are of composers.

In May 2016, the Bru Zane Classical Radio was launched, an internet radio that can be received free of charge worldwide and plays music by French composers from the - in the broadest sense - Romantic era, 24 hours a day .
